Ascorbic acid, phenolic content, and antioxidant capacity of red, cherry, yellow and white types of pitaya cactus fruit (Stenocereus stellatus Riccobono) Agrociencia
Beltrán-Orozco,M. Carmen; Oliva-Coba,Tzatzil G.; Gallardo-Velázquez,Tzayhri; Osorio-Revilla,Guillermo.
In order to sustain the growing interest in the consumption of pitaya cactus (Stenocereus stellatus Riccobono) fruit as potential neutraceutical food, the total phenolics and ascorbic acid contents were determined in four pitaya cactus fruit types (red, cherry, yellow and white). Total phenol and ascorbic acid concentrations were correlated to the antioxidant capacity (fimol Trolox eq g-1 fresh sample). The results showed that the white and yellow types contained a higher amount of phenol compounds and ascorbic acid than the cherry and red types. A linear relationship was found between the fruit antioxidant capacity and the total phenol content (R²=0.97) and ascorbic acid content (R²=0.79), indicating that both of them contribute together to its...

Benefits of superfine grinding method on antioxidant and antifungal characteristic of Brazilian green propolis extract Scientia Agricola
Augusto-Obara,Thalita Riquelme; Oliveira,Jacqueline de; Gloria,Eduardo Micotti da; Spoto,Marta Helena Fillet; Godoy,Karina; Vieira,Thais Maria Ferreira de Souza; Scheuermann,Erick.
ABSTRACT: Green propolis is found only in Brazil and due to its important biological characteristics, the food industry views it as a rich source of bioactive compounds. However, an extract must be produced for its application, which is difficult considering the rigid characteristics of raw propolis. Superfine grinding, a process capable of reducing particle size, enables the extraction of most bioactive compounds in propolis. This study evaluated the influence of grinding on size characteristics, antioxidant and antifungal properties of Brazilian green propolis for food preservation. The propolis powder was produced through six different types of grinding (different sieves and rpm), and its quality was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy-energy...

Influence of the growing region, quality classification and harvest year on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) index of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon red wines Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Bridi,Raquel; Lobato,Sergio; López-Alarcón,Camilo; Lissi,Eduardo.
In the present work, we studied the effect of the growing region (IV, Metropolitan or VI - VII regions), quality classification ("Varietal", "Reserva", and "Gran Reserva") and harvest year (2000-2012) on the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of thirty-six Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon red wine samples. The Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) and (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) ORAC methods, employing fluorescein and pyrogallol red as probes, were applied to establish the properties of the wine samples. The obtained results show a strong dependence at of the three indexes on the grape growing region, with higher values obtained in wines from the IV region. These results can be related to the climatic characteristics of this Region, which include dry...

Nutritíonal Composition and Polyphenolic Content of Edible Peumus boldus Mol. Fruits Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Velásquez,Patricia; Sandoval,María Ignacia; Giordano,Ady; Gómez,Miguel; Montenegro,Gloria.
Peumus boldus is an endemic Chilean tree whose edible fruit lack a history of scientific research. The aim of this study was to determine its nutritional composition (moisture, ash, crude fiber, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) and polyphenolic content (total phenolic content, HPLC-DAD, HPLC-MS/MS analysis) at different stages of development. The results show that the fruit decreased in ash, crude fiber and total phenolic content throughout its development, while its carbohydrate and protein content increased. An increase in phenolic molecules such as catechin and epicatechin was also observed. This is the first report on the nutritional composition and phenolic content of Peumus boldus Mol. fruits.

Phytotoxic and antioxidant activity of seven native fruits of Brazil Acta Botanica
Peres,Marize Terezinha Lopes Pereira; Lopes,José Rodrigo Regis; Silva,Cristiane Bezerra da; Cândido,Ana Carina Silva; Simionatto,Euclésio; Cabral,Márcia Regina Pereira; Oliveira,Rita Machado; Facco,Janaina Thomasi; Cardoso,Cláudia Andréa Lima; Simas,Pedro Henrique.
We investigated antioxidant capacity, phenolic content and phytotoxic effects in seven species of fruit native to Brazil: Acrocomia aculeata, Hymenaea stigonocarpa, Tamarindus indica, Byrsonima intermedia, Psidium firmum, Myrciaria cauliflora and Ficus obtusifolia. Phytotoxic effects were assessed from crude ethanol extracts and semipurified fractions. In four of the seven fruits, total phenolic content, as determined by Folin-Ciocalteu assay, was higher in the peel than in the pulp. We found that total phenolic content correlated significantly with antioxidant capacity. High-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection revealed the presence of the flavonoids quercetin and rutin in some fruits. We also evaluated the allelopathic effects of...

Role of pH on antioxidants production by Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis BJM
Ismaiel,Mostafa Mahmoud Sami; El-Ayouty,Yassin Mahmoud; Piercey-Normore,Michele.
Abstract Algae can tolerate a broad range of growing conditions but extreme conditions may lead to the generation of highly dangerous reactive oxygen species (ROS), which may cause the deterioration of cell metabolism and damage cellular components. The antioxidants produced by algae alleviate the harmful effects of ROS. While the enhancement of antioxidant production in blue green algae under stress has been reported, the antioxidant response to changes in pH levels requires further investigation. This study presents the effect of pH changes on the antioxidant activity and productivity of the blue green alga Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis. The algal dry weight (DW) was greatly enhanced at pH 9.0. The highest content of chlorophyll a and carotenoids...
